When Before Meets After

I never thought I was the type of gal to put a picture of myself up on a website, skin exposed, juicy bits of orange peel oozing over my pants. Come to think of it, I never thought I’d use the word “gal” either but I am getting older and wiser! The point of this post and picture is not to complain and engage in false modesty. I’m also not trying to say I’m obese. Some may even find my before picture offensive. Nevertheless, everyone has their own personal goals and vision of what is acceptable in terms of body type. I can assure you, there is no struggle with body dysmorphia. I don’t think super skinny models are the norm but I want to feel comfortable in my own clothes. As a 49 year-old, I can’t eat whatever I want anymore, I have to exercise and I was slacking off.

For a while I was going to the gym with some friends, but I stopped. I was walking on my treadmill, but inconsistently. I would try counting calories, meal plans with tons of sodium and fillers and few calories, walking, only eating certain food groups together…of course nothing lasted. At some point you have to learn to find an activity that puts the heat on, and eat but within reason. I also learned to stop being ruled by the scale. I’m throwing my husband under the bus, but I always scold him. He would weigh himself twice a day, AFTER a salty meal. Everyone knows you only weigh yourself once a week (maybe), and only in the morning and only after you’ve peed or even better, pooped! He’s still a work in progress, but I’ve learned that it’s pure sabotage!

I love yoga because it’s an activity I can do at home or in basically anywhere I want to. Yoga is accessible on my phone, on my iPad, on my computer or at a studio if I want to check out a class with a friend. If I’m overtired, I can do a light class, with a small amount of burn. If I want a challenge, I step up a level. I can try multiple teachers and take a short or longer class. I’m able to do intermittent fasting and substitute juice for meals. Somehow, I’m not a slave to food. I’m “ketosis”, but as I’ve mentioned I will chow down on  piece of birthday cake, or some garlic bread if the occasion calls for it.
