I’d Rather Poke My Eye Out Than Diet

Here we are! Does my title speak to YOU? If so, you’re at the right place! Almost at the end of January and I can see on all aspects of social media, a lot of you are sticking to your New Year’s goals. I elected to go on the “new” WW Freestyle, formally Weight Watchers, with a group of family members and it’s been fantastic. I know, I know! You’re thinking, “Another post about dieting?” Yes! Another post about dieting! Just in case you’re someone who is trying another form of diet and miserable or starving, this may be a great move for you.

Some of the Pros:

  1. WW is affordable. My sister-in-law’s employer is even covering a percentage of the cost. Honestly with the 20 dollar a month fee you get the app, which helps you maintain and accurately measure all of your meals. On the app, there’s an entire world of chats and groups for motivation and recipes galore. You clock your activity and can link your health to a fitbit or apple watch. Think of the app as a virtual health diary.
  2. I don’t think there’s a restaurant that’s NOT on the app or on the website. Even if your family drags you into KFC, you can whip out your phone and figure out what’s going to work for you in terms of points. If you want to splurge on a fried chicken leg, because you got it like that, then go for it! It’s easy to assimilate at any restaurant.
  3. There are so many support systems on Facebook and other areas of social media, that not only do you have people to whine about your journey, but there’s also some great ways to get motivated, or learn how to cheat the system, by making your own two ingredient pizza crust. I’m on a Ninja Foodi group and it’s incredible! You really don’t miss that KFC chicken leg with this bad boy!
  4. Oprah! I actually hate myself for using this manipulative ploy. I’m certainly not getting paid to push WW, but I LOVE Oprah!! And I love that she is real about her weight struggle like the rest of us. With her guidance, WW has come into the 21st century. I find Oprah fun and inspiring AF! I even follow her on IG, she’s hilarious. Yes, she has a cook who is making sure she stays within her points, I’m sure but she STILL has to stay within her points, like you and me!
  5. You can eat anything you want, as long as you’re willing to figure out your points. You may have rollover points or activity points to supplement that Dairy Queen you’ve been craving (Me). I did Keto a few years ago, and not for weight as much as for my Fibro. It worked well, but was limited and I had some big costs for ingredients.

Some of the Cons:

  1. WW is not affordable for EVERYBODY. Twenty dollars a month may seem like a fortune if you’re on a tight budget. There are other apps, which mimic the WW app and are free. The only problem is you’ll basically just get the counting points and may have to pay for a restaurant guide and other elements of the app. My husband is doing iTrack Bites, which has the points set up differently but seems to be working well for him. My Fitness Pal, is another great app I’ve used before. I think I heard Sarah Silverman say she lost weight years ago on Lose It (also free), so you’re not trapped if you don’t have the 20 bucks a month.
  2. The point system. You’re counting. Counting can get old. With Keto, you don’t have to worry about that. There are days where you feel like you’re in a 30-point cage and you just want to eat an entire pizza! You have to be disciplined. Can you deny yourself the treats and find another path to satisfy your sweet tooth?
  3. Is there such a thing as TOO MUCH FREESTYLING??? This ties into number two. Yes, there are tons of zero foods, but zero foods (fruits and veggies), turn into point yielding foods when turned into a smoothie! So if you think you’re going to hit Smoothie King, Panera or drink Naked all day, those points can add up! I found this out when I was at an airport looking for a healthy low-point nosh. I scanned a Naked drink on my app and it came up 13 POINTS!!! What, What???? I think half a carby bagel was less!

At the end of the day, you know your body and you may or may not know what works for you. One thing I can say is, WW is a community and it takes a village, no matter what you’re looking to lose, or maintain. From ten pounds to a hundred pounds, there are so many people trying to lose the amount of weight, which works for them. Whatever the case may be, if you’re not in control of your eating and you want to be, this may be a great place to start! I’d love to hear your comments! The good the bad and the ugly!

Anyone Else Off The Wagon?

I confess, I’m off the wagon right now. I can feel my stomach getting ripe and juicy and I want to cry but in some ways I really don’t care. It’s the holidays, and I know it’s not an excuse but my mother-in-law just made homemade chocolate candies, stuffed with creamy peanut butter. Yes, not […]

When Before Meets After

I never thought I was the type of gal to put a picture of myself up on a website, skin exposed, juicy bits of orange peel oozing over my pants. Come to think of it, I never thought I’d use the word “gal” either but I am getting older and wiser! The point of this […]

Chrissy Teigen…Yes, I’m Obsessed.

I know I’m not the only one obsessed with Chrissy Teigen ( I hear we have been mispronouncing her last name for years, who knew?). I bought her first cookbook, Cravings and was immediately smitten with literally every recipe. Chrissy even managed to make greenbeans into a sweet and salty affair! When her second cookbook, […]

A Jewish Girl Resurrects The Bagel

Bagels were a staple in my life since basically birth. I think I came out of the womb and my grandmother handed me a bagel. Bagels could be used in various situations growing up. Yom Kippur was laden with a large variation of bagels, served along side a dairy meal. You don’t want to get […]
