10 Things I Wish I Knew: The Good the Bad and the Ugly

If I knew then what I know now:

I would have paid more attention in math class

I would have not had a thirteen-foot afro after 1972

I would have copied down or recorded all of my grandmother’s recipes

I would have pressed my family for more information, concerning their immigration. That’s right folks, I’m ONLY second generation American!

I would have not squeezed my feet into those size 7 Tretorn sneakers, causing my feet to curl up and suffer like a 13th Century foot-binding victim

When my step-father called me a “bitch”, when I was all of seven in front of a slew of family, I should have said, “You stupid weak, man. Who calls a CHILD a nasty name? Then called out the family members that stood there.

I would have told someone how unhappy I was in the 5th grade

I would not have acted like one of the Heather’s

I would not have been so impulsive or afraid

I would understand how important money management is

Or the kind of parent who screams at school employees when their child only spits on a staff member […]

The Truth Is Like Barbed Wire.

So ladies and gents, is it ever alright to be completely honest with someone? In my opinion there are rules. You don’t have to say everything that comes to mind. I’m frenemies with a girl who likes to hit with what I’ll call subtle barbs. Things like, “Carly asked me why you’re wearing that dress, […]

You’re Done Having Babies. Period.

Trigger warning. Gross description warning! If you call a vagina “lady parts,” then this post is not for you. Just keep it moving. A couple of weeks ago I was struck with a serious headache and stomachache. I couldn’t figure it out, but was popping Advil like a champ. I chalked it up to a […]

Rant time! Last week I stumbled upon a news story concerning a principal, who decided to enact a dress code for parents. Carlotta Outley Brown, the principal of James Madison High School in Houston has banned parents from entering the school in pajama bottoms, sagging pants, ripped jeans, head wraps (not religious), hair rollers, leggings […]
